From Hobby to Profession – Rae Austin Loves to Crack A Surprise
I have fond memories of the fun and excitement of Christmas, birthdays and Easter from when I was a child. Waking up to piles of presents waiting at the end of my bed and not knowing which one to open first was a real highlight of my childhood days!
As I grew up, I wanted to share that magic and delight with others and more importantly bring back some fun to the art of gift buying; countless were the times I heard “I don’t know what to give or what shall I buy?” But it’s not always about just the gift – beautiful gift packaging can heighten the sense of intrigue and anticipation that surrounds the opening experience.
One Christmas, uninspired by what was on offer, I decided to make my own cracker gift barrels for a party I was hosting. I didn’t want the exact same cracker for everyone, I wanted to give something personalised, with a surprise inside that was tailored for each person. I scoured craft boutiques, sewing stores, gift shops and more to gather and make each piece of the cracker and fill it with something unique.
Watching the joy on their faces and listening to the conversation each unique gift generated inspired me to turn my hobby into a business and I’ve never looked back since.
